Our new house is really starting to come together! We finally pulled the trigger on a couple really important design elements like rugs and window treatment. These “finishing touch” items may not seem like a huge deal, but when you are eating pizza off of cardboard boxes for a couple weeks these are the things that take a house from “under construction” to “a little less under construction.”
The window treatments were a HUGE project for us. We wanted something clean, minimal and stylish – and we also had a major problem. Starting at 2PM being in our house is like walking on the face of the sun. The front of our house faces west and is high on a hill. Despite being in the middle of the city, NOTHING blocks the sun from beating down our door…and our windows. We needed a solution that blocked the heat and UV rays AND DIDNT block the views we love.
I’ve never picked out window treatments before because our last home came with gorgeous plantation shutters in every window. No need for shades or curtains. I was totally lost. Luckily, in Atlanta we have one of the most fabulous design resources in the country: ADAC. After scrolling through the ADAC directory for approximately five seconds I ran across The Shade Store. LIFE SAVED.
I needed a lot of help, and luckily and people at The Shade Store were willing to spend hours upon hours with me going through options. Per usual I waffled back and forth between Solar Shades and Roman Shades, Curtains and Cellular Shades. I landed on a mix of solar shades and roman shades…and I’m obsessed with the outcome.
Let’s start with focusing on solar shades. Here are the top three of the top benefits of solar shades, why I’m SO GLAD I chose them, and why I can’t believe I lived without them for so long:
Top Three Benefits of Solar Shades
Sunscreen for Your Home:
Solar Shades will absorb heat, provide UV protection and reduce glare all while keeping your view intact. It’s a win, win, win. These shades are also a designer favorite because they look very clean in any style of home. A modern home can make a statement with a dramatic organic or natural finish in a funky pattern, and a home like mine that is a little more of a coastal California in the middle of Georgia vibe can go with a classic solid 🙂
These shades also block a serious amount of heat! How much? I cant really say. The sun hits every window differently and it’s hard to provide a particular degree. Solar Shades will filter some of the light; therefore, they will block out some of the heat. #science
Great Design is Transparent:
Haha get it? But really.
It’s all about percentages – but don’t worry – you can’t fail this math class. The percentages of the solar shades refer to the transparency of the weave and the amount of UV rays that are still passing through the shade. For more visibility, they recommend a 10% solar shade. This percentage is the most transparent which allows more light to come through, and helps maintain your view. If you want to keep out more light or want more privacy, they suggest a 1% or 3%. The Shade Store has 4 transparencies and 36 colors to choose from, which is both a blessing and a curse – so many options!
Also, The Shade Store’s Solar Shades will allow us to maintain a view out of the window during the day and will be private. At night this reverses and people from the outside may have some visibility inside, which I think is so romantic. In our historical community everyone opens their windows at night and shows off dramatic lighting and family activities (and by family activities I mean cocktail parties.) I think it’s SO neat.
Lot’s of Options, Easy to Measure, Easy to Install, Quick to Ship
So let me preface this by saying…I didn’t really have to do any of this myself. I leaned HEAVILY on The Shade Store designers to make my selections, they sent someone out to my house to do the measurements for it (it’s SO MUCH harder than it sounds), they shipped in seven days (crazy fast for anything custom) they came out to install them a couple days later. Everything from the shopping experience at ADAC to the final installation was incredible. It’s honestly one of the easiest, and most impactful, decisions I’ve made for our house so far.
I can’t wait to show you guys what I picked and how they look in the new (cooler) rooms!
Thanks to The Shade Store, especially the wonderful team at their ADAC Showroom, for all of their help gussying up my naked windows! All opinions are my own.
