The holiday season is in sight, which means that once again you are obligated to consider whether or not you will actually workout the remainder of the year. Let’s set the stage: happy hours, snowman cookies and out-of-town guests seem to come out of the woodwork. Cozy blankets and Christmas movie marathons are calling your name – and hitting the gym becomes a challenge when there is pumpkin pie that needs to be consumed. I slack off every.single.year. Best Atlanta Workouts for Out-of-Town Guests
But, 2017 will be different. Working out puts a dent in the inevitable stress of the season – and helps ensure that the stuff that’s supposed to be fun actually will be. So, I’m going to keep up my routine, earn my eggnog and make time to hit my favorite Atlanta studios. But what about out-of-town guests? Hosts get a lot of credit for taking on the heavy lifting, but it’s not always easy to be away from home. That’s why this year I’m going to book some of my favorite classes for the entire holiday crew – including (and especially) my visitors. Here’s where I’m taking them:
BLAST: Best Atlanta Workouts for Out-of-Town Guests
Perfect for all skill levels // Seriously motivating + supportive + attentive instructors // FANTASTIC workout
This is the ONLY class my husband will even consider going to, so it’s a must for when our family comes to town. There’s just something special about this method and the community it attracts. Each class offers a combined 60 minutes of treadmill & floor intervals. 30 total minutes of cardio, 30 total minutes of strength training. You alternate periods of intense exercise with brief (and I mean brief) recovery periods (High Intensity Interval Training- “HIIT”). I’ve never walked out of class without dripping with sweat. It’s my favorite way to earn Waffle House breakfast – which I’m more than happy to swap out for an extra helping of mashed potatoes.
#1 reason to go: The Walker, Jogger, Runner guidelines make this a perfect workout for guests of all fitness levels. So, while a runner’s sprint might be 11.0 mph, a walker’s sprint could be 6.0mph – and everyone is still being pushed to their limits. Instructor Assistants will replenish your water bottle, swap out your towel as needed, and provide you with heavier or lighter equipment so that all you have to focus on is giving your body the best workout possible.
Most innovative workout in Atlanta // Brand new, beautiful space // Train like an olympic athlete (no, really)
This is the hardest, most mentally engaging workout in Atlanta. In one-hour you’re going to
suffer through experience as much calorie-burning, fat-shredding high intensity interval training (HIIT) and high-performance metabolic conditioning (MetCon) as you can handle. FIT9 is set up in rows that contain the SkillMill treadmill (see below), plyo boxes, weights, Crosscore (suspension-oriented training – similar to TRX) and the Aqua Bag (boxing!). As you progress, you make your way down the row, performing a unique set of exercises. I guarantee your muscles are scream with fatigue… but you’ll fight through because you feel feel like a total bada**. Plus, the instructors have perfected the “stop cheating and get back to work side-eye”, so slacking isn’t an option. There are always modifications and advancements to accommodate for, or further challenge, anyone.
#1 reason to go: The SkillMill. This is no one-trick pony treadmill. It’s self-powered, has a resistance bar (like your resistance knob in spin), and duel handles so you can go from all-out sled push to high speed sprinting. The endurance set alone will leave you drenched in sweat. The classes are also the first in the United States to incorporate the Unity™ Self, SkillMill’s performance-tracking software, to motivate you to improve performance. Who doesn’t love a leaderboard?
SculptHouse Best Atlanta Workouts for Out-of-Town Guests
Low Impact // Celebrity Sightings // Amazing fitness boutique
Following the Lagree Fitness method, SculptHouse is the world’s first studio to offer the Megaformer and the NFL-endorsed Woodway® Curve treadmill in the same 50-minute class. The super low-impact method has a dedicated following of Atlanta celebrities (models, pro football players, etc.) that will line up to tell you the classes shed calories – not joints. If your guests haven’t tried the Woodway – they need to book a Sculpthouse class ASAP. It controls the runner’s pace with a curved surface and nearly frictionless slat belt system, which engages more muscle groups – and burns 30 percent more calories – than a traditional, motorized treadmill. They also have an amazing boutique (just in case that people have any last minute holiday shopping to do.)
#1 reason to go: The megaformer. It targets every inch of your body with slow and controlled movements that strengthen and lengthen muscles. If you’ve never tried it, you’re in for a real treat. And by treat I mean a humbling, crazy difficult, super fun workout that increases your flexibility and improves your posture – even after just one class.
