Queen Bey has officially declared 2016 the year of the lemon! Well…lemonade at least. Honestly, who are we to argue with Beyonce? In fact, as summer months heat up we start reaching for our summer hero more and more. The all mighty lemon! Lemons are among the healthiest products we can integrate into our diets – and are more versatile than any other health food I know (decorating with coconut oil is significantly harder…I’ve tried.)
Below are some of the best ways to use lemons this summer – inspired by the amazing folks at The Limoneira Company – the largest provider of lemons and avocados (another of our summer favs!) in the United States.
Hydrate with Lemon-Water
Whether you’re hiking, at a picnic or just lounging in the backyard, lemon water is a great way to stay hydrated and nourish your body, all at once. Up the ante and treat your tastebuds by adding other fresh ingredients, such as cucumber or mint.
Add a little Citrus to your Beauty Routine

Beat the Summer Bikini Bloat
Lemon juice is digestions right hand man (or woman.) It loosens toxins in your digestive tract, and relieves symptoms of indigestion such as heartburn, burping, and bloating. I always sip on a little lemon water before a long plane flight and I always feel way better when I touchdown. That or the bloody marys…which also have a slice of lemon in them so I think the question here is moot.
Fight Voice-Harming Infections
Lemon’s natural antibiotic properties make the citrus fruit a natural remedy to fight infections that can directly effect your voice, throat, and upper respiratory system. Keeping lemon on-hand, particularly if your summer plans include touring, cheering for your kiddos on the soccer field or…. breathing. These yellow delights are a great natural defense to viruses and bacteria.
Summer is all about being active, so keeping your energy levels up is priority number one. Lemon is a proven natural energy-booster and can also maximize your mental clarity. I love to place a fresh lemon on each table setting. This adds a fun pop of color and freshness, and compliments nearly any color scheme. Plus, that leaves more room in the budget for fancy champagne! CHEERS!

Fresh lemons + sea salt is the perfect healthy combo to season your grilled veggies this summer!
Clean the Grill with Lemons
Don’t throw away your lemons after you’ve mixed up your face scrub or exfoliated your dry knees! Did you know you can use them to clean the BBQ when you’re finished grilling? Now you do! Plus, the fresh scent is great and there are no added chemicals.
Repel Pesky Ants
Place 1 cup of lemon juice in a water bottle and spray around the areas you frequently see ants (ugh, ants.) This will help repel them.
Weeds be Gone
Banish weeds for good using lemon juice. Fill up a spray bottle with 5 cups of lemon juice and two cups of water and douse the offending plants till they’re well-coated. It should take a couple of days for them to shrivel. Take THAT weeds! #sodomestic
