Time to say goodbye to the ClassPass Unlimited Membership…
Here are the Cliffnotes:
- Across the country ClassPass is discontinuing the Unlimited plan and moving members to their Core plan – which is 10 classes per month. (In Atlanta that means $100/month 10-class)
- ClassPass is giving members 10 free classes a month for the first three months of their new plan.
- You don’t have a choice. This is happening. ClassPass peeps are NOT happy.
ClassPass members who have the ticking time bomb that is the unlimited package will be able to keep their existing plan for another full billing cycle (mine will expire on December 9) before being forced over to the “core” plan: 10 classes a month.
That means different things for different cities. In Atlanta my $160/month membership will now be $100. In New York City, unlimited members paid $200, and now they will now pay $135 for core.
I have no intention of ditching ClassPass entirely. If you take the 10 classes in Atlanta each class will only cost $10…and you still get the flexibility of up to 10 different workouts. It’s not the same deal, but it’s still a good deal. No reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
But that’s not to say I’m not pretty bummed.
In the last two years, ClassPass introduced different levels of packages and raised prices as much as 50% in some cities. In an open letter posted on the company’s blog, ClassPass founder and CEO Payal Kadakia explained the troubled past of the ClassPass unlimited membership:
“For every class taken, we paid our studio partners. The more classes that were taken, the more we paid. As you can imagine, our business costs increased rapidly. So we raised our plan prices in an effort to compensate—but we tried not to raise them too much. After all, we wanted to remain as accessible as possible. But in some cities, we even had to raise our prices twice in one year, which was awful for our members and painful for my team. We simply couldn’t make the plan work for our business.”
The response to getting rid of the Class Pass Unlimited membership has been scathing at best – so we know they really suited up for this announcement. Here’s hoping they have some strong armor…
