Does It Coordinate With Other Items in Your Closet?
That awesome green skirt that looks good with this one amazing top in your closet…but nothing else…might not be a keeper. Having versatile pieces in your closet makes your life 10 times easier in the morning on the way to work, on the weekends when you only have 7 minutes to make it to brunch or when you’re late for date night. The exception here is formal wear or special occasion outfits. Those get a hall pass – but just barely.
How Would You Feel If You Were Wearing It When You Ran Into Your Boss’s Boss?
I am always finding myself falling into the ‘I’ll just wear this for running errands.’ trap. Super comfy but seriously unflattering pants? They’re good for something, right? WRONG. Thinking about running into someone important, like an executive in your company or an ex-friend or ex-boyfriend helps to put things into perspective. If it doesn’t look good – why not select something that does? Don’t leave that tempting item sitting in your closet willing you to make a decision that won’t reflect you at your best.
Do you Have Something Similar – but Better?
I have approximately 10 plain white shirts. Well, that is I HAD 10. Now I have two. I picked the best two, of the highest quality, and tossed the rest. It was so silly to reach for the ho-hum versions when I had the crown jewel hanging out an inch away! Why play from the bench if your starters are ready to hit the field? #sports.
Is the Maintenance Worth the Look?
I absolutely hate dry cleaning items. I always forget to pick things up, I haven’t found a place I like, and I can’t help but start to add the cleaning bill to the cost of the original item. A $200 cashmere sweater on sale for $150 will cost $200 soon enough after a couple trips to the cleaner – and it’s upwards from there! Granted – there ARE things worth the cost of dry cleaning, like suits, coats and those can’t-live-without-this-shirt/sweater/pants items, but that’s it. Otherwise I always ask myself if the recurring bill is worth the look.
