Buying a new mattress is a big investment, and with the increasing amount of one-size-fits-all options online, a tricky and confusing process. Deciding where to go to find the best options for your family, your health and your SLEEP isn’t easy…but maybe it should be. Since we wrote about building the perfect bed, we received a lot of questions and comments asking us if we think they should invest in an organic mattress. Our answer: YES! We worked with the team at Natural Sleep Mattress in Buckhead and Naturepedic to tell you why:
It’s a Healthier Option. Period:
I’m the kind of girl who asks for no sugar in her Starbucks latte at 9AM and then swings through Krispy Kreme for two (okay, three) glazed doughnuts with extra gluten at 11AM. It’s all about balance. And there are two Krispy Kremes on the way to the office, so really the fact that I only stop at one is a huge victory. I digress.
I’m not a stickler for everything organic/natural all the time, but when it comes to my bed…all natural is the way to go. If you’re going to choose one room, or one item, in your house that is the healthiest…start with where you sleep. I mean your face is pressed against your mattress 33.33333% of your ENTIRE LIFE (shocked face emjoi/tired emoji/coffee emoji.)
Pro Tip: Look for the MADE SAFE seal – or better yet, ask Vincent to help identify which mattresses have this certification (Naturepedic was one of the first mattress companies to certify all of their mattresses as MADE SAFE). This means that they don’t contain any materials or components that are known carcinogens, behavioral, developmental, reproductive, and neuro toxins, hormone disruptors, heavy metals, pesticides, fire retardants, GMOs, toxic solvents, or harmful VOCs.
You MUST try Before You Buy
Forgive me internet, for I have sinned. Before I met Ilana and Vincent from Natural Sleep Mattress I was moments away from buying a mattress I had never laid eyes, let alone tired body, on from an online-only retailer. As a card carrying millennial, I’m an unabashed and hopelessly dedicated online shopper. Why wouldn’t I shop online for a mattress? Turns out, there are a LOT of reasons why I would have been disappointed in that decision. Only you can determine the “right” mattress for you. It would be great if we could take an online one size fits all approach to how we sleep, but we can’t. No website can tell you which bed is best for you. The mattress you choose depends on your sleep position (back, side, stomach) and which bed provides you with the right amount of support.
Vincent spent two hours (no seriously, TWO HOURS) helping us find the right mattress. He showed us approximately 1 billion options (Natural Sleep Mattress has the best selection of natural and organic mattresses I’ve ever seen) and customized each and every mattress so we were 100% sure we got the perfect fit for us. He also was extremely conscious of our budget. We wanted to make and investment, but we didn’t want to take out a second mortgage. He totally…got us. We ended up selecting the Naturepedic EOS Classic. It’s the single best decision we have made for our health and our sleep.
Customize. Customize. Customize.
When you’re house hunting you have a list of “must haves”, right? You should have a similar list when shopping for a mattress. WHO KNEW? Vincent helped us put our list together- because we honestly didn’t know where to begin. #Clueless #AsIf. He also helped us understand that what I wanted in a mattress was different from what the hubs wanted – and for once, that’s okay! It was a solid therapy session, which comes free with the mattress. The EOS, the bed we selected is FULLY customizable. It has a 12″ profile, and EACH SIDE can transform from an extra-firm all the way to a plush. Plus, it has a 3″ top comfort layer and an 8″ bottom support layer. Y’all it screams luxury!
Because I believe in transparency, I do have one complaint. I asked Vincent if my side of the bed could be 2/3 the total width (I wanted my mattress a little softer) and my husband’s side only be 1/3 (he wanted his side a little firmer.) Apparently that option isn’t available, despite it being pretty much a law that the wife should get significantly more bed and sheets/covers real estate. This seems like a big oversight, but what I do know. “Fairness” and “compromise” win again in this marriage, I guess.
Mattresses made from natural materials like wool, cotton, natural rubber latex and silk will last longer and be more durable. A good quality mattress should last you at least 15-25 years.
You Will Sleep SO MUCH Better
Living in Atlanta means I’m hot ALL THE TIME, and no amount of air conditioning can combat the space heater that is my enormous labrador rescue pup who insists on laying as close to me as he possibly can. Luckily, natural latex, which is foundation of the EOS, is also one of the most breathable and temperature neutral materials available.
Bocephus (our pup) totally approves! He was also super helpful in putting the mattress together…NOT.
Best of all, it’s made from the sap of a rubber tree, which basically means you are sleeping with the fairies in the FernGully Rainforest (who remembers that amazing movie?) The finished foam is certified to the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and wrapped in a stretch-knit organic cotton outer casing.
Combine the customized support with a cooler sleep and you have the silver bullet to a better morning. This is a totally crazy claim, but I swear it’s true…I need less coffee in the morning because I sleep that much better. I hope Starbucks stock doesn’t plummet with this announcement.
Later this month I’m going to share my fun master bedroom reveal! Check back to see how I styled my EOS mattress – and if I’m still loving it! (Note: chances of not loving it are approximately…zero.)
Thanks to Natural Sleep Mattress in Buckhead and Naturepedic for partnering with us on this story! We love these brands – and think you will too. All thoughts are our own.
